Doris Heritage Park opened in June 2025, bringing inclusive play, recreation, and community gathering to Gig Harbor, Washington. The 2.25-acre community park anchors the first phase of the 30-acre Gig Harbor Sports Complex. It also complements the adjacent Tom Taylor Family YMCA and two multi-use sports fields.
In response to extensive public engagement, BCRA designed a highly active park within a tightly constrained site. The plan includes six pickleball courts, three bocce ball courts, and an inclusive playground for children ages 2 through 12. In addition, the park provides a reservable event stage and lawn, two picnic shelters, and a restroom and concessions building. Together, these amenities create flexible places for daily play, organized recreation, and community events.
The City named the park for Doris Heritage, a Gig Harbor native and Peninsula High School alumna. Heritage became a world-class distance runner, five-time international cross-country champion, and two-time Olympian. Her legacy of movement, perseverance, and mentorship gives the recreation-focused park a meaningful local identity.
Beyond recreation, the design team worked with Puyallup Tribal members and City staff to shape a place rooted in local culture. The maritime-themed playground combines custom and standard play structures with interpretive storytelling. As a result, the design connects active play with the people and stories that continue to shape Gig Harbor.
Sustainability also guided the project. Bio-retention facilities manage stormwater on site, exceed minimum code requirements, and turn essential infrastructure into an educational landscape. Ultimately, Doris Heritage Park advances recreation, environmental stewardship, and long-term community use within one compact site.
