This psychiatric health facility in Kern County, California serves adolescents and adults in need of a calm environment in which to begin healing. Design was centered around the concept of "grounded optimism," with attention paid to both respite and active areas, lighting, and acoustics. Interiors are earth-toned, with gentle surprises in color, material, and messaging. Nature nooks inside offer quiet spots to view the natural world, while private courtyards outdoors offer interaction with nature. The exterior of this 31,400 SF facility is residential in scale and emulates the hills beyond. Designing for emotional needs rather than age will allow the facility to flexibly accommodate a wide population. This facility will open for patients in late 2022.
