Wayside Cafe at UPPC

Location: University Place, WA
Client: University Place Presbyterian Church
Area: 40,000 SF

University Place Presbyterian Church (UPPC) has served as a center for its larger community since 1943. Several additions to the original building over time created a large, disjointed facility that was underutilized by members and didn’t attract the younger demographic the church sought to embrace. To activate the space, encourage community, and become more reflective of who they are, this renovation included creating a social hall and cafe. The design team applied a timeless hospitality sensibility for an approachable ambiance. A variety of seating options, customizable by the user, offer both intimate areas and gathering spaces. Experiential graphics tell the UPPC story and share core beliefs, while new wayfinding makes navigating the large facility easier for guests. By working closely with the client, our team met the goal of modernizing the facility while respecting its history.
