Prairie Line Trail

Location: Tacoma, WA
Client: City of Tacoma

The new Prairie Line Trail runs along the historic rail corridor built by Chinese contract labor in 1873 that served as the first transcontinental railroad connection from the Great Lakes to the Puget Sound and helped shape the early development of the city.

Services

Working with the City, BCRA’s design incorporates intensive low impact design elements and appropriate stormwater techniques. Soil remediation was a challenging factor of the trail's reconstruction due to the years of heavy rail use. Unique elements of the trail include environmental graphic components for signage and wayfinding, and interpretive elements that visually brand the walking path and bike trail and educate park users on the history and sustainable design elements.
