Located in North Seattle, this project is a six-story, 201,617 square foot building that includes 170 units of affordable housing for families and individuals. Simple, elegant design inside and out was the aesthetic and functional goal for this project. Our decision to use two floors of concrete with wood-frame on the remaining floors allowed an extra residential floor to be added. Working closely with the owner, BCRA was able to maximize unit count without compromising usability, flow, and natural light in the residential spaces, as well as offer more three-bedroom units than are typically found in multifamily developments.
A maker space for crafting and projects was included, as well as solar panels that provide hot water. An exterior courtyard caters to families, with an interior community room adjacent. On the exterior, bands of color on street-fronts and sloping parapets add visual interest at no extra cost. The pedestrian plaza, pictured above, integrates public art and sets a welcoming tone for visitors, residents, and pedestrians.
