BCRA is designing a new Cedarcrest Middle School for Bethel School District, replacing an aging facility and portables with a 120,263-square-foot learning environment for 850 students. Originally planned as a modernization and addition, the project evolved through an early alternatives analysis that demonstrated greater long-term value in a complete replacement school. During construction, Cedarcrest students will learn in a swing-school location.
Set into a hillside, the new school uses a central commons stair and elevator to efficiently connect its upper and lower levels. A secure courtyard between two classroom wings offers outdoor learning and gathering space with views to the site’s mature cedar grove. Cedar-inspired textures and materials carry that connection indoors, while views of Mount Rainier from the top-floor library inform a large mural at the entry and commons—the school’s social heart.
The new three-story school will provide flexible, connected spaces that support student success and give the Cedarcrest community a campus built for the future.
With a full capacity of 850 students, completion of this project is anticipated by Fall 2028.
