Adolfson & Peterson Construction joined the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties in a groundbreaking ceremony today to kick off construction on a new YMCA for the community of Sumner.

This 110,000 square foot recreation center, which will serve nearly 22,000 users annually, includes a natatorium, gymnasium, climbing wall, running track, multipurpose rooms,  racquetball courts and administrative offices. The new building is expected to open by June 2015.

The Gordon Family YMCA will have tilt-up concrete walls as the predominant exterior wall system for economy and speed of construction. Sloped roofs help reduce the overall scale of the building and help it fit into the surrounding neighborhood of single-family homes. The facility, which is targeting LEED Silver Certification

“Our relationship with the YMCA spans nearly 15 years and is based on a truly collaborative Team Build approach on every facility,” said Jim Newman, senior project manager with A&P. ”The Sumner facility will be completed using the same principles of collaboration and innovation.”

A&P has been actively involved with this project for several years, assisting YMCA with acquisition of the property and working with City of Sumner to secure funding and permits.  The Fife-based builder has successfully partnered with the YMCA on several past projects, including the Gig Harbor YMCA, Hazelwood Family YMCA in Silverdale, Tom Taylor Family YMCA and Expansion in Gig Harbor, and several facility upgrades around the region.
