Destiny Middle School

The former Rogers Elementary School, built in 1907, endured vandalism and neglect for over a decade before Pacific Charter Schools and Green Dot teamed with BCRA to renovate the space for the area’s first charter middle school. A complete interior renovation focused on classrooms designed for intimate teacher-to-student ratios. Warm, neutral tones in the interior reflect the building’s heritage. Large, arched window frames were preserved, which allow natural light into learning spaces. Some trim, doors, and lockers were also refinished and integrated into the design. The exterior has been sensitively restored to blend into the traditional neighborhood and highlight historic architectural details.

Summit Olympus High School

Collaborative, interactive spaces that can flex between learning and circulation were the main design focus for this 1929 brick building that has been repurposed as a high school. Transparent garage doors and an absence of built-in casework allow full convertibility. Classrooms designed for instruction from both sides of the room add to the school’s flexibility. The urban location in the heart of Tacoma’s Dome District, yards away from an active railway, required double- and triple-glazed windows in order to preserve the views and natural light, while minimizing noise disruption.
