The design for Carter Lake Elementary was extremely fast-paced, requiring completion of bid documents in six months in order to secure state and federal funding for this new replacement school on Joint Base Lewis-McChord that serves 500 students. Flight-themed murals in the lobby and corridors create a sense of place and pride for the mostly transitional military-family student body. Portions of widened corridors became program space with the inclusion of intimate seating and writable surfaces. For safety and security, our design team provided a layout in which one staff member is able to monitor and control the play areas, bus and parent drop-offs, and parking lot—all from the front office.
