Yelm Skate Park

Yelm Skate Park

City of Yelm

Yelm, WA

BCRA and New Line teamed with the City of Yelm and the local skate community to design a new concrete skate park. The community’s previous skate park was built ad hoc by local skaters and when the city planned on using the space for a new community center, the city also committed to building a permanent home for the skate community.

Funded entirely by a US HUD Community Block Grant through Thurston County, the design team worked with local skaters in public meetings to develop specific features that not only would be exciting for locals to use but provided a flavor of skating that was unique to Yelm and would attract skaters from around the region.

Paramount to making the skate park uniquely Yelm, a community member suggested incorporating a pioneer wagon wheel, a prominent symbol for the city. On that suggestion, the design team included the wagon wheel as one of the primary skate features in the park. The parks prime location along State Route 507, ensures the skate community will be prominent within the larger community as well.

As prime consultant, in addition to the design, BCRA led the City of Yelm through the intricacies of meeting project requirements for federal grants, designing the project to a strict maximum budget, and working to find a quality reputable contractor in a specialty construction area.
