Hillside Elementary School

Hillside Elementary School

Clover Park School District

Joint Base Lewis McChord, WA

75,300sf

This new 75,300sf elementary school was designed to replace the original school built in the 1950s. One of the design goals was a clearly defined, welcoming entry. This was achieved on the exterior with a peaked roofline, traditional brick façade, curved awning, and distinct signage. In the lobby, a mural that captures the essence of the area’s natural elements and community soars to the ceiling.

Portions of widened corridors became program space with the inclusion of intimate seating and writable surfaces. These breakout areas foster innovation and complement different learning styles, especially for children who work best in small groups. The design phase required completion of bid documents in six months in order to secure state and federal funding.
